Creamy Vegan Caramelized Onion Pasta
When it comes to comforting yet elegant dishes, this Creamy Caramelized Onion Pasta is a winner. Sweet, golden caramelized onions are paired with a rich, creamy sauce, Parmesan, and a hint of chili oil for a touch of heat. While the recipe is written to be primarily vegan, it can easily be adapted with regular dairy products if that’s your preference.
This pasta is proof that simple ingredients can create something extraordinary. With just a handful of pantry staples—pasta, onions, cream, and a few spices—you can whip up a dish that’s both satisfying and versatile. Perfect for a cozy dinner at home or impressing friends with a restaurant-quality meal, this recipe is one you’ll want to keep in your rotation.
What Makes This Pasta Special?
What truly sets this dish apart is the caramelized onions. Taking the time to cook the onions until they’re sweet, jammy, and golden brown creates a rich flavor base for the sauce. When paired with creamy oat-based or heavy cream and a sprinkle of Parmesan, it creates a dish that feels indulgent without being heavy.
The addition of chili oil adds a subtle spice, balancing the sweetness of the onions beautifully. If you’re not a fan of spice, you can simply omit the chili oil without compromising the dish’s flavor.
This dish is also versatile—whether you prefer a fully plant-based meal or want to use regular butter and Parmesan, the flavors remain just as delicious.
Why You’ll Love This Caramelized Onion Pasta?
This Caramelized Onion Pasta is designed to be vegan-friendly by using plant-based alternatives for cream, butter, and Parmesan. The oat-based cream adds a velvety texture, while vegan Parmesan mimics the salty, savory flavor of traditional cheese. However, if you have regular dairy on hand or are not vegan, you can easily swap in heavy cream and regular Parmesan without adjusting the recipe.
It’s a dish that accommodates everyone at the table—perfect for families or gatherings with mixed dietary preferences.
The Art of Caramelizing Onions

How to Serve Creamy Caramelized Onion Pasta
This dish is perfect as a standalone meal, but you can also pair it with:
- A light side salad for a fresh contrast.
- Roasted vegetables for extra texture and flavor.
- Crusty bread to scoop up every bit of the creamy sauce.

Don’t forget to garnish with fresh parsley and an extra sprinkle of vegan Parmesan for the perfect finishing touch!

A Few Final Tips
- Customize the spice: If you’re not a fan of chili oil, you can simply omit it. The pasta will still be deliciously creamy and flavorful.
- Reserve pasta water: The starchy water helps loosen the sauce and make it silky smooth. Add it gradually until the sauce coats the pasta perfectly.
- Make it ahead: You can caramelize the onions in advance and store them in the fridge for up to 3 days. When you’re ready to serve, simply cook the pasta and finish the sauce.

How much of each condiment?
Do you mean herbs and spices? I would star with maybe a teaspoon of each.
Thanks for helping! Starting with a little and adjusting after adding the cheese and chili oil is a good approach😊
Hi! The seasonings are listed to taste. As a gentle starting point, I would try 1/2 teaspoon each of sweet paprika, oregano, garlic powder and onion powder, plus 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika. Taste after adding the parmesan and chili oil before adjusting salt and pepper😊
This recipe is absolutely delicious. He did a great job with this one. I will be coming back for every recipe.. super creamy and flavorful you wouldn’t know it was vegan
Thank you so much Miquesha! So glad you loved how creamy and flavourful it was😊
I love this dish. It tastes great and is easy to make. I would not change a thing but I would add the measurements for the condiments.
Thank you Danny! So happy you enjoy it. The seasonings are currently listed to taste, but I agree that suggested starting amounts would make the recipe easier to follow. Thanks for the helpful feedback😊
Great recipe and so easy to make! Love how simply and delicious this recipe is. We discovered chili oil for the first time because of this dish! I love how you just list the spices and leave the amounts to our discretion (I typically add extra of almost everything in a recipe!) Thank you!!
So glad you enjoyed it Susan! Love that it introduced you to chili oil too😊
Best pasta ever!
Thank you Shae! So happy you loved it😊
delicious
Thank you!!😊
So glad all three recipes have been 5-star hits!❤️
Where in the list of ingredients do you mention 1 cup of water? Seems like a lot of water to get the onions to carmelize.
Hi Mary! You are right, the cup of water appears in the method but is missing from the ingredient list. It helps soften the onions, but it needs to evaporate before they can brown properly. You can add it gradually as needed to loosen any browned bits rather than leave the onions sitting in liquid. Thanks for catching the missing detail!
I made some changes according to my preferences (e.g. a little less chili oil, a little more cream), added some smoked tofu and edamame beans and it turned out absolutely delicious. I am definitely making this again, thank you!
Your smoked tofu and edamame additions sound delicious Nina! Glad you got the sauce just how you like it😊
I love it 🤩 mmmmmhhhh 🤤
Glad you loved it Nelli!😊
How much of each seasoning did you use
Hi Alex! The card only gives the seasonings to taste, so there isn’t a recorded exact amount. As a starting point, I’d try 1/2 teaspoon each of smoked paprika, sweet paprika and oregano, plus 1/4 teaspoon each of garlic and onion powder. Taste after adding the cream and vegan parmesan, then adjust the salt, pepper and spices to your liking 😊
Please say what kind of onions are used
Yellow onions would be a good choice here—they soften and caramelize nicely. The card doesn’t specify a variety, so thanks for pointing out that missing detail 😊
Pretty good. I’ll make again but with white onions and more chili oil.
Thanks for trying it Virginia! Hope you enjoy your next batch with the extra chilli oil😊
